Display of old memories at the Big E - West Springfield, Mass.

The annual Eastern States Exposition, or Big E, in West Springfield, Massachusetts, is upon us again, and the sense of nostalgia it brings for those who have gone to the fair since childhood seems to be one of the biggest draws.

One display I particularly liked reflects nostalgia not only for the years I remember from childhood, but going back much, much farther.  It's a wonder the Exposition hasn't done this long ago, and I hope it will continue to enlarge in future years.

We see past events, special celebrities, and a material from the old Storrowton tent theater, which operated for only a couple of decades from the late 1950s to the 1970s.

There's still time to catch it at this year's fair, which concludes this weekend.

A ride to Massasoit Spring -- West Springfield, Massachusetts

We salute the Town of West Springfield on its 250th anniversary with a postcard of bygone days, likely the turn of the twentieth century.  The reverse side describes the "primeval forest country" of West Springfield, about an hour from Springfield--and one can see that in a horse and carriage--or even a Model T Ford on rutted, dirt country roads such as this it could have very well taken an hour.

We don't know the name of the route in the picture, and in those days, it might not have had a formal name, but it could have been present-day Bear Hole Road or Great Plains Road.  The Massasoit Springs was a small, rustic enterprise, typical of nineteenth-century tourist sites, that provided a spot for lunch, hiking, and perhaps even the restoration of health by drinking the pure spring water.  If you weren't interested in the restaurant, perhaps the nearby cage in which a bear was kept could prompt you to make the drive.  From around the 1870s to just about the turn of the century, this was enough to bring at least a few tourists any lovely summer day.

In 1906, the area was taken over and turned into the Bearhole Reservoir, and still provides a nice place for hiking.  Any bears seen are likely not to be in cages, however.

Big E - 2023

It's that time of year again!  Visit New England's great state(s) fair in West Springfield, Massachusetts.  Behind the fife and drum corps band are some of the six replica statehouses from each New England state.  That's Rhode Island peeking out from behind the tree, and Massachusetts next to it.

It's a little end-of-the-summer world and for many of us, a family tradition.  Enjoy!

The small town of big practical jokes - MEET ME IN NUTHATCH

Here's a bit about my novel, Meet Me in Nuthatch:

A whimsical, poignant tale about a practical joke-turned publicity stunt that fires up the small town of Nuthatch, Massachusetts, in a desperate attempt to attract tourists.

Christmas tree farmer Everett Campbell proposes turning the clock back to 1904 and reviving the town’s cozy past, an idea he gets from watching his young daughter’s favorite classic movie, Meet Me in St. Louis. She is thrilled at being allowed to dress up and pretend, but not everyone in town is enchanted with the nostalgic promotion—including Everett’s moody teenage son.

The media, and the tourists, do come, but the scheme also attracts a large theme park corporation that wants to buy Nuthatch 1904.

Everett now stands to lose his town in a way he never imagined, and his neighbors are divided on which alternate future to choose.

A local drug dealer, Everett’s boyhood enemy, may hold the future of the entire town in his hands unless Everett can pull off one of his most spectacular, and dangerous, practical jokes.

Nonotuck to Roger Smith to Holyoke House - Holyoke, Massachusetts

The Nonotuck Hotel, pictured in this 1919 postcard, opened in 1915 on the corner of Suffolk and Maple streets.  It later became the Roger Smith Hotel, part of the chain of hotels that began in Connecticut in 1928.  This one in Holyoke joined the chain and changed its name in 1937.  (The chain no longer exists - there is only one Roger Smith Hotel remaining in Manhattan.)

By the 1960s, the Roger Smith in Holyoke became The Holyoke House.  The building was sold at auction in 2014.

The Sheraton-Stonehaven of Springfield, Mass.

An ad in the Springfield Daily News (Springfield, Mass) for holiday festivities at The Sheraton hotel.  The chain began with a hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1933, and a second one in 1937 in Springfield as the Stonehaven, originally an apartment building.  Here is a postcard image from that era.

The chain expanded through the decades with new locations all over the country and all over the world.

Sistine Chapel Artwork Exhibit at the Big E - West Springfield, Massachusetts

The best exhibit at the Big E this year is the must-see artwork of Michelangelo.  A show of copies of his restored work on the Sistine Chapel is currently on tour, and the Eastern States Exhibition fairgrounds are the lucky hosts of a smaller version of this exquisite art exhibit.  From the website of the production:

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition

For more information,  follow the exhibit on social media on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The exhibit is produced by Special Entertainment Events (SEE), a L.A.-based exhibition production company which acquired the worldwide rights to the fresco reproductions. The photographs were taken post-restoration of the ceiling; in some cases, color enhancement was necessary to match the images for consistency.

The highlights of the frescoes are presented in their original size. This innovative interpretation of the timeless masterpieces can be viewed up close, including The Creation of Adam. It has previously made stops in Montreal, Vienna, Shanghai, Dallas, Munich, and New York.

On display in the Young Building, we are able to see the master's work close up as we never could at the Vatican in all its majesty in that setting.  The administrators of the fair are to be congratulated and most sincerely thanked for obtaining this exhibit.  More such artistic and cultural displays in the future would be a splendid addition to New England's Great State Fair.

Next Weekend at Westover ARB

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron, America’s tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, is bringing its RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit mobile theater and WWII P-51C Mustang aircraft to the Great New England Air Show at the Westover Air Reserve Base May 16 and 17. The exhibit is a unique FREE opportunity for all ages to experience the inspiring story of the Tuskegee Airmen – America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel.

The RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit will be open to the public beginning at 8:30 a.m. In addition, the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s P-51C Mustang will be available for up close viewing while on static display. It is a rare treat for attendees as it is one of only a few like it still flying.

The exciting RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit is a fully functional movie theater featuring the original short film “Rise Above,” designed to take the audience on a journey through time – and then through the air. Visitors get an intimate look at the struggles and challenges faced by the Tuskegee Airmen, who showed extraordinary courage and strength of character as they fought for their right to serve our country during WWII. The theater’s dynamic 160-degree panoramic screen creates the sensation of being in the cockpit soaring above the clouds in the P-51C Mustang, experiencing the excitement and thrill of flying breath-taking aerobatic maneuvers. It’s much more than a history lesson; the Tuskegee Airmen’s ability to triumph over adversity serves as a means to inspire others to RISE ABOVE obstacles in their own lives and achieve their goals.

“The exhibit is truly a one-of-a-kind adventure,” said CAF Red Tail Squadron Leader and P-51C Mustang pilot  Brad Lang. “Kids and adults walk away from this experience with a greater understanding of the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen. Their story, and that of the CAF Red Tail Squadron, is a means to inspire them to achieve their potential. It’s a message that resonates with all ages because of the unique and interactive way it is told. It’s an experience not to be missed.”

Westover Air Reserve Base is located at 57 Patriot Ave. in Chicopee, Mass. Admission to the Great New England Air Show, and parking on base, is FREE!
